A U shaped couch is a sectional sofa that wraps three sides of a seating area, so everyone faces each other and the TV at the same time. It is the highest-capacity sofa you can buy, usually seating six to eight people, and it can replace a sofa, loveseat, and chair with a single piece. The main decisions are which kind of U you want, whether your room can hold it, and whether it should recline, sleep guests, or rearrange.
There are two kinds of U, and they fit very different rooms.
Some U shaped sectionals are symmetrical, with matching sides. Others have one longer side, described as left arm facing (LAF) or right arm facing (RAF). "Facing" means you are standing in front of the couch looking at it, so a RAF chaise is on your right from that view. Put the longer side along your longer wall, or away from the main walkway.
Stationary U shaped couches offer the most fabric and color choices at the lowest prices. Reclining sectionals add manual or power recliners, often with storage consoles and cup holders for a home theater setup. Sleeper sectionals hide a pull-out bed for guests. Modular sectionals are built from individual pieces, so you can start with a smaller shape and grow into a U, or rearrange it when you move.

It depends on the model. A double chaise sectional can work in a mid-size living room, while a full U with two corners suits larger rooms and open floor plans. Compare the listed width and depth with your floor space, and leave at least 30 inches for walkways around it.
Most seat six to eight adults, and larger modular configurations can seat more. Double chaise models seat fewer people upright but let two people fully recline on the chaises.
An L shaped sectional has two sides and one corner. A U shaped sectional has three sides, either with two corners or with a chaise on each end. The U seats more people and encloses the seating area, while the L takes up less floor space.
A double chaise sectional has a chaise lounge on both the left and right ends of the sofa, forming a shallow U. It is a popular choice for couples and for rooms that cannot fit a full U shaped sectional.
Modular sectionals can be rearranged whenever you like, since each piece stands on its own. Standard sectionals have a fixed layout, so choose the configuration and orientation carefully before ordering.
